Eefje Sandmann 'Eco-Friendly Fur'

"The Netherlands is fighting the muskrat with all its might in order to keep the dykes and grass lands from turning into an unstable mesh. Every year around 320.000 muskrats are killed, at an annual cost of around 31 million euros. Because pest control does not want to be associated with the breeding of fur bearing animals or the fur trade, they destroy the cadavers. But Eefje Sandmann has spotted opportunities for ‘eco-friendly’ fur: the animals are killed anyway, and using their fur could save thousands of mink lives. She has used the fur from four tanned muskrats to create a pair of warm mittens. The porcelain button with a Delft blue picture of a muskrat signals what the user is wearing: sensible fur Dutch Homegrown."
