'Embracing' men - late 19th century

When Columbia University librarian Herbert Mitchell died in 2008 he left his collection of daguerreotypes, tintypes and ambrotypes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among these treasures were photos from Men 'embracing' (ca 1850-1890). Very strange especially for that time.
