Karl Valentin
I was in Gent, Belgium, yesterday to visit the Tati exhibition. Talking about the history of humour, and the fact that humour isn't an american invention. Karl Valentin came to my mind. For me, father of humour. Beginning of last century, together with Lisa Karlstadt they've created the kind of humour Tati probably loved, and Rowan Atkinson. And ofcourse myself.
When I was a little girl I never could understand why people loved Charlie Chaplin, except for 'The Great Dictator' and 'Modern Times' ofcourse. And I respect him as a film director. But the shorter 'funny' acts which you saw on television, I have never liked. I like Harold Lloyd though, and Buster Keaton.
Same issue with Laurel & Hardy.
Probably it's also my kind of humour that makes me putting this statement: Karl Valentin is the father of humour worldwide :).
Forgot someone (Thanks Ingrid), in this row of origins of humour belongs also Max Linder.

I'd like to add Max Linder, and a Hear Hear ! is in place.
ReplyDeleteJacques Tati is the uncle, for sure.
