Just letting you know I did the quizz. It's by Michele Gelfand, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business. She created the free 'Threat Dictionary'. It "identifies language that shows when people feel threatened emotionally or physically and measures the magnitude of that perceived threat."

It's pretty interesting:
"The possible uses for the threat dictionary are vast, Gelfand says. It could be used to track when leaders inflate threats and which groups are labeled as dangerous. Researchers could analyze CEOs’ or officials’ speeches for threat mentions and compare them to fMRI images of what happens in peoples’ brains as they hear those terms.
Social media users could use it to be more conscious of how they’re participating in the spread of threatening messages and make choices about how much of that kind of language they want to see or what they want their kids to see. Gelfand’s threat barometer can be used to track how much threat one is exposed to on social media. The dictionary could also be combined with voting data to predict how a perceived threat might influence election results. Or it could examine how threatening language varies between different media outlets and how it affects the way they report the news."

First you have to check what kind of Muppet you are (the Mindset Quiz). Unfortunately you don't get a Muppet character as a result. Are you curious about mine? 😉 ... Drum roll ...: YOUR RESULTS - Very Loose Mindset. "The loose mindset is less attentive to social norms, more willing to take risks, more impulsive, and more comfortable with disorder and ambiguity."

I didn't expect anything else. I think I'm Animal.

As I said pretty interesting stuff, I think I'm going to buy her book 'Rule Makers, Rule Breakers'.

Via Futurity
Sylvana Knaaphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08284472553996282954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2687778968431022624.post-1769548942948521792020-03-07T17:24:00.001+01:002020-03-07T17:24:33.798+01:00Only Because Of These I Would Start Drinking TeaI'm a coffee person. It's public now. She passed away a couple of years ago. I didn't cry. I was relieved. I write this on her birthday, December 25th. Don't panic now, I won't go into details. Google 'borderline mother' if you want to know more.

Growing up with a borderline mother is like walking on egg-shells. It's a very unsafe situation. I'm not angry with her, I don't blame her ... it is as it is. The person I am now is her legacy.

Because of it:

I'm still single.
I often had difficult relationships which were unsafe for me. Typical, it's the only situation I know, unsafe situations. Fear of commitment. This combined with my HSP personality is killing for a relationship.

I have a self-esteem of minus 10000.
My mother divorced my biological father: "You are like your father, he couldn't love also".
You're ungrateful, you have to dress your age, you look terrible in high heels, everybody is looking at you (negative), et cetera et cetera. Meaning: you don't live your life like I see fit.

I doubt myself.
Whatever someone does to me I end up blaming myself.

I don't like the month of December.
Because it was her birthday. Always stress. Always adapting to her. Checking how she feels, in what mood she was. Trying to rescue awkward situations.

I was a rebel. So on one end I adapted to keep the peace. Till I left home I walked around in clothes she liked. On the other hand after I left home I did what I want. This caused a lot of fights between me and her.

I always take care of other people, I don't take care of myself.
I have often too much empathy.
I have a ridiculous sense of justice.
I have difficulties with excepting compliments or help.
Being treated as a number, or being treated without respect makes me furious.

Am I afraid that I'm borderline too? No. Because I know what it is to live with someone who is borderline. I'm very conscious about that with everything I do. The needle is going the other way, often too far the other way.

I have a daughter myself. She's 21 now. My mother was a real grandmother till my daughter was about 7, 8 years old. From that moment on I had to protect my daughter from her. The only thing I can wish for is that I did a better job.Sylvana Knaaphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08284472553996282954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2687778968431022624.post-91898450987800502022019-12-01T12:15:00.000+01:002019-12-01T12:15:43.834+01:00Your child and the dangerous InternetI was reading this post just now: Best 5 Tips On How To Protect Your Children On The Internet. And had to think about the time my daughter was young.

It's all simple. At least in my head. For the biggest part of her young life I was (and still am) a single mother, with a fulltime job. When she was just a toddler I realized that 'the times they are a changin' and I spend evenings figuring out Facebook, MSN, Hyves (Netherlands), Twitter et cetera. I decided never to use a child lock on my computer (It's easier to explain porn than for example the situation in Israel). I created social media accounts, had experiences with a lot of creeps.

She was 3 when she sat at my computer, educational games (Robbie the Rabbit), when she was about 6, 7, I game myself a Gameboy and told her this was mine but she could ask if she could use it. This worked.
When she was about 10 years old I allowed her to have an account on the Dutch social media Hyves, because most of the kids in her class had one. But ... she had to accept me and a couple of friends of mine as friends, to keep track on what she was doing (yes, she knew). One boy asked her to switch to MSN, with which I had very funny experiences, so I said no. There's also a chat tool on Hyves. I also showed her what happened and could happen when I would receive a weird message from a man.
She was at that time bullied by one of her 'friends'. I figured out (with an okay from my daughter) who it was, called the parents and (surprise) nothing happened. Asked her father when he picked her up from school to confront the boy, but the latter laughed in his face. So I put a message on his newsfeed. Solved!
After she came back from a language course in the UK, Cambridge, she was allowed to have a Facebook account.

The funny thing is, that whenever something happened she came running downstairs to ask what it was (a website, a message ...). And I would explain. I noticed that most parents, and most teacher didn't know enough about social media, mobile phones, what kids would do with it. Scary!

She first used an old desktop computer from my work, a friend installed Kubuntu (because I forsaw weird clicks and virusses) .. in English (sorry, computers and mobile phones need to be in English). And later she had her own laptop. She turned out to be a gamer. Problems? No! If I told her to quit the game, she - finally - would quit the game. Finally ... a couple of times I would take all cables in my bag to my work.

I realize that it also depends on the character of your child. On the other hand, there were always a lot of kids running around in my house, but I made sure they knew the rules. No bashing groups of people: no "it's so gay", "mongol", making fun of for example Moroccon people. If they did they had to leave. They knew that a lot of things were allowed, but they also knew I had eyes everywhere :). And if something happened, no problem, back to the beginning: no computer allowed anymore. And believe me, this didn't stay with a threat.

Be honest, transparent, clear and consequent. But what I've noticed is that parents don't want to be bothered with these kind of things, as long as the kids are quiet. And parents and teachers don't take the time to check what's going on in the world of their child. What is popular, what are kids doing, what do they find intriguing et cetera.

I agree, it was very tiresome, especially as a single fulltime working mother, but it's what you have to do as a parent nowadays. The result is: I have a strong, independent daughter who uses her own brains.Sylvana Knaaphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08284472553996282954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2687778968431022624.post-16813515127553884462019-11-30T10:50:00.002+01:002019-11-30T10:50:56.534+01:00'The Self-Care Calendar for Festive Season Survival' - I NEED!Canadian agency The Hive launches 'The Self-Care Calendar for Festive Season Survival' for the Mental Health Association, Canada.

I'm the Grinch, I hate the month of December. Why?

- Probably my youth. My mother forced to be merry. December 25th was her birthday, so we always 'celebrated' Sinterklaas, December 5th. On top of this I had a lot of birthdays in December.
- I have problems with forced celebrations. I will celebrate May 2nd ... August 13th ... whatever.
- I don't like the cold dark weather.
- I hate the fact that all of a sudden even the biggest asshole is 'nice & giving'.
- I love music ... I hate Christmas songs.

"According to research, 59% of people admitted to feeling sad during the holiday, while 55% lacked motivation or energy and 51% said they were fatigued. With the pressure to feel merry seeming to increase with each passing December day, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and forget some of the keys to contentment and well-being."

Result: I survive the month of December. I'm a perfect collegue at work, I never take days off.

So if you would ask me 'What are you going to do with Christmas'? My answer will be: 'Sit on the couch with a nice bottle of white wine or a glass of whisky watching Netflix'.
Electric cars look like cars. Why?

Personally I want a car to make noise, and have a key. But of course humanity killing earth I understand the electric cars. Although an electric car, using batteries et cetera is as polluting as a regular car (*sidetrack*).

It would be awesome if we would design electric cars in a complete different way. Different shapes, different interiors. Leave this to Rem Koolhaas and Joey Ruiter. Well done!
Fashion doesn't have anything to do with style, but with economics. You don't think it's silly to feel good in Prada and lousy in off-the-peg clothes? So you feel good if you spend a lot of money? Than you have a problem.

F**k what people think about you, it's more important what you think about yourself. Wear off-the-peg clothes to a high level event ... I do, with a big smile on my face. It's simple. If somebody doesn't like this ... it's his/her problem. To be honest, I don't even want to know a person like that.
Why help promoting virginityA WTF moment of the day. You can buy 'virginity' pills online. Wait ... pills ... how does that work? A couple of hours before you want to fake virginity you put the pill in your vagina. It releases fake blood during the act. Totally 'innocent' of course.
It seems to me a cute sex toy if you're in to it. But for real! C'mon!
I was confused, what do I do? Buy myself a present? Or do I get presents? It seems to be an alternative for Valentines Day. Another 'shopping' day.

Today I'm thinking about the word 'man repeller' because of this article on Bored Panda: Woman Posts Outfit Pics Her Boyfriend Hates, Captions Each One With A Quote From Him. I checked her Instagram account, which is entertaining and noticed the #manrepeller.

I checked Urban Dictionary:
manrepeller
–noun
outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. This includes but is not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.

–verb (used without object),-pell·ing, -pell·ed.
to commit the act of repelling men

Huh?

Googled and first hit is manrepeller.com, a popular fashion blog.
I put the filter on images and *shock* found an article on The Guardian about the Milan fashion show The 'Man Repeller' look.

All of a sudden I remembered that years ago I bought these red checkered golf trousers (I know ... I'm such a fashionista 😏). A male friend made the remark: I'm definitely not getting aroused by this. I replied: You're not the target audience.

Doesn't 'man repeller' gives to much credit to men?
Isn't 'men repeller' now another 'shopping' invention?

Have to think about this.Sylvana Knaaphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08284472553996282954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2687778968431022624.post-74583321940099955832019-11-10T09:10:00.000+01:002019-11-10T09:13:01.420+01:00Women in the Gaming Industry<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Before we had sustainability and now the 'Diversity and Inclusion' as a topic within almost all big corporates.
... and thinking out loud about discrimination, tolerance and acceptance.

Let me introduce myself: I'm straight, single mother, 60 years old, half Indonesian, working full time. From the moment I can remember people (incl my mother) told me, 'act normal', 'dress your age', 'act your age', 'poor Micky Puck' (my daughter), 'you're weird', 'blauwe' (blue one, negative nickname for an Indonesian halfbreed), 'you're a woman with balls', 'you're so strong, don't wine, you can deal with everything', 'you're arrogant', 'why do you have such an attitude?', 'you're a bitch', et cetera et cetera. All in a negative way. Very annoying (mildly put).

I realize that gay people, the whole lgbtq+ community, have this feeling at least a couple of times a day.

People from other countries often say to me: "oh, you're from Amsterdam. That's cool, such a tolerant city!" ... Sorry??!! Let me explain how the majority of Dutch people think:
- they always have friends who think the same as themselves
- if someone they know are going through a shitty time they walk away
- they don't like / are afraid of foreigners
- they don't like / are afraid of people who think differently
- they don't like / are afraid of gay people

I can go on like this, but I won't. I'm not saying that they're all assholes. There are also nice people who think like this. I guess they believe certain media, they're not using their own brain.

In general, start with yourself if you want to change things. Have your own opinion. Be open minded. I realized this when my daughter was younger. She didn't like it then, but a week ago she gave me a compliment, saying she was happy that I taught her to use her own mind.
And small things, she wasn't allowed to use expressions like 'that's so gay', 'he/she is such a mongol'.
Her teacher at kindergarten once told me: 'Micky has a boyfriend', I told her 'Micky has a friend, I don't want you to use expressions like this about my daugther'. (and yes, I was weird again).
Friends blamed me that I was/am too sensitive about this, it's just fun, an expression, it's not your business. I always replied (and reply), if nobody does anything, nothing will change.

About 'other' people I taught my daughter: When you see someone, unconsciously you put someone in a box, in a box you created in your own head. The difference is what you do next. Most people walk away or get agressive when they, themselves, put someone in a box which has the label 'weird, I don't like'. What you have to do is talk with this person. You will be surprised that often you will put this person in another box.
For me there are two kinds of people: people I like, people I don't like.

I can go on like this but I won't. Hopefully the point I want to make is clear.

If you don't understand this? Start using your own brain instead the opinion of other people, the media. Approach people the way you want to be approached. Be yourself and accept others.

I have questions though. Perhaps someone can tell me why people act differently to my daughter because of me (already when she was very young) and why are people so agressive (or afraid?) of 'other people'.Sylvana Knaaphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08284472553996282954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2687778968431022624.post-83539153100355834352019-03-02T09:39:00.001+01:002019-03-02T09:39:34.637+01:00Muzak Helps To Eliminate Fatigue, Tension And Monotony (1965)An ad from 1965.
